Just a few comments surrounding my experience with EX-FACTORY. This was my first experience making a purchase through EX-FACTORY. I have had contact with EXF Sales Staff numerous times over the last year as I searched for several pieces of equipment. - I appreciate the EXF system and service very much and will continue to consult in the future when I am in the market for equipment. - Several comments regarding specific experiences. With the purchase of the Planer, I traveled to Zeeland to see the Planer before purchasing; an approx. 5 hour drive. I liked what I saw and made a deal on the spot. Making the staff in Zeeland aware that this was my first purchase from stateside, and based on the email ads of EXF regarding providing Canadian Customs Brokerate Services, I was counting on the staff to do what was necessary and inform me of what was needed from myself to have a smooth and trouble-free shipping experience. - It didn't quite happen; there were a few glitches, nothing serious, but somewhat stressful for myself being the first experience of this type. Certainly, it was my lack of experience, and now I know how the system works, but I am disappointed in the communication from staff regarding the transportation across border. The PM was always there to help immediately with any questions I had, helped to get as much as possible information about the machine and tried to make this deal worthwhile for both seller and buyer. I certainly would like to send my words of appreciate to the other Product Manager who also helped me to make important decisions and found [technician] who helped at the highest level possible to have this machine delivered and reinstalled in my facility in Baltimore. I just want to know, since the BIESSE and the small SHODA are going to be disassembled, rigged, packed, and loaded by the owner (am I correct?) themselves and not by EX-FACTORY's staff, are you sure they are doing it in the correct manner? - Is it possible [for them to] put codes/label every cable/part they disconnected, so we can assemble it again here. Another most important thing is: those machines need to be strapped with metal stip (which is very strong) inside the container to avoid it moving during transport. - I had a bad experience with other un-professional machine dealer in North Carolina; they didn't tie the parts inside the container correctly, and my Clamp broke. Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. The broken part is really insignificant and easily replaceable. Saturday morning's "did you know this Saw is broken" question from the trucker ends up being 99% false alarm which is very good news. The Saw was well tarped and the trucker was friendly and quite helpful at this end. I managed to locate a friend with a Fork Lift so the unloading ended up going well also. I want to thank the seller for storing the machine through the winter. That was very helpful and much appreciated. I also want to thank everyone for all the help and good service. I am quite happy how everything turned out and do not expect or want any compensation from the seller. I look forward to having the Band Saw completely restored and then looking for some more machines to outfit my shop. Took a lovely ride 6-hour to [Seller's] haven in the Catskills yesterday…and found that the NORTHFIELD 16" Jointer is nearly flawless and is just what I need…so I told Pete that I wanted it; we agreed that he would ready it for shipping right after Labor Day. Thank you for keeping me in the loop on the Jointers and being patient with our decision-making process; we were ready at the right time to jump on what we wanted, and we feel we got a dream machine: low hours, only two owners, great care and condition. EX-FACTORY rated it only as 3.5 paws out of 5, which after seeing it I'd say is low!

Please let me say that speaking with some of the category managers have been educative and rewarding. From [Product Manager 1] I learnt for the 1st time that I needed two types of Sanders (a) A Drum Sander and (b) a Profile Sander. He emphasised that the Louvers/Staves are difficult to sand hence the need for a Profile Sander. From him I also learnt that the SILVER Brand is a Chinese Product. I don't want a Chinese machine if I can get a German/European or American machine. From [Product Manager 2] I learnt that the MEREEN JOHNSON is the top Brand in Rip Saws. He also educated me on how many hours the various Rip Saws are designed to work. Even though I want to start a Shutter line with a capacity for 200-300 Shutters a day my Rip Saw, Kiln and Sanders should be able to accommodate 500 doors or more because if you make Shutters you will definitely get orders to make windows and panel doors or half panel shutters doors and windows. This was why I asked Kola to buy the Moulder Sander from the Auction site. I have visited a lot of Shutter Websites on the internet no Shutter company is doing Shutters alone they all do ancilliary products like windows, partitions, doors e.t.c. I want to do the same thing which is why my Multi Rip, my Sander and Kiln Dryer should be able to accommodate more than 200 shutters per day. - From [Product Manager 3] I learnt that the WEINIG Moulder is the top of the gang. He also told me that a transformer is a cheaper and more reliable way to meet my electrical specifications of 50 cycles. - Speaking with [Product Manager 4] I learnt that I could build the storage or shed for drying the wood myself and save on cost by buying just the boiler.
All these and more were questions that I needed to answer. They were kind enough to oblige me. After speaking with them all I came to the conclusion that the following machines are what I need to start a shutter line: 1. Kiln Dryer; 2. Multi Rip; 3. Moulder; 4. Crosscut; 5. Sanders; 6. Tenoner Mortiser; 7. Chamfer Machine; 8. Assembly Table/Clamp/Crimp.
[Product Manager 5], please let me emphasise that without the category managers input I will not have come this far with understanding the machineries that will be best suited for me. At this stage I am not concerned with discounting I just want to make sure I get the right equipments. Discount will come later after I have chosen the machines that I think will serve me best.
Finally, let me say that I meant no harm in speaking with your colleaques which was why I usually introduced myself and then mention to them that you are aware of my enquires. Speaking with them have helped in crystalising some of the options before me I now know which Moulder, Multi Rip, Under Cut and Chamfer Machine I want. I am yet to make up my mind on the Sanders, Kiln Dryer, Tenoner/Mortiser and Clamp/Crimp and Assembly Table. With regards to the Holzma beam saw, I understand the position you are taking as there is not much money involved in this sale [EX-FACTORY note: purchased a …$ 95,000 (new) Panel Saw for …$ 3,500]. However, it has been my understanding that EX-FACTORY backs the claims of the seller who represented the machine as "in good condition" and as represented by the EX-FACTORY listing. In our conversations the seller also claimed that the PLC was working on the saw. We understand fully that the saw is bought in "as is" condition but that condition was represented as all items in good working order as discussed. - Rather then getting into a disagreement that will get us no where…..is there any compromise here with regard to the present situation ??? Can EX-FACTORY help with the costs of refit ?? How about [the service technician's] time in the repairs ??? I am open to a fair solution. I have spent a LOT of money with your company over the past years and would like to continue doing so in the future so I am asking that we do not just close the door on this issue as is. - Tom Boyda
EX-FACTORY Reply: Good evening, Tom: - I understand there may have been some developments since last night in regard to potential solutions that will make the Saw operable. I went to work and provided [the service technician] some phone numbers of some contacts last night, and in the meantime he came up with some alternatives involving his former boss that might have changed the equation in your favor. - I did want to address some important points in your written request below, in the context of our stated desire here at EX-FACTORY to always be separating ourselves from the competition in the used woodworking machinery market by providing superior service; both during and after the sale. - While your understanding of our policy in helping resolve problems for our customers is essentially correct, this particular instance is unique in that I specifically instructed you not to buy this machine because the control is obsolete and no longer supported by HOLZMA; and that the seller purchased it from a local auction and never ran it or powered it up himself. When you decided to move forward anyway I assumed you figured at such a low price you could afford some repairs. - I was only willing to consummate this deal with you in an “as is-where is” situation for that very reason; and you will recall I said that as a former HOLZMA Engineer I had steered our customers to other machines in the last couple years; because of our commitment to help solve after-sales issues and my intimate knowledge that this control more than likely would not work at all. - All that being said, Tom: we are all about compromise and really appreciate the opportunity to earn your business – we want you to be a happy EX-FACTORY customer! That’s why I’ve stayed involved and spent time with [the technician] on the phone after faxing schematics from my desk to get you rolling. - We’re not about to close doors with anyone, or for that matter endanger an image we’ve worked hard to build on any one sale. I wanted to make one last contact with you regarding the ANDI "Exxact" we purchased from you October 10, 2003. - First of all, thanks so much for helping us make the purchase. We did find things worked out very well considering everything. - You will remember my men had gone to Kansas to hear the spindle run, and when they go there, it was not operational. The agreement was we would listen to the spindle run over the phone. That was a mistake, because listening to a spindle run via cell phone is not a workable substitute. When we got the machine, we only ran it a very short time until we found it breaking bits, making a terrible growl at speeds above 5,000 rpm etc. - When my technician disassembled the spindle, the bearings were shot, the armature was out of balance, and the cups that hold the tools were so badly worn they seated at top rather than at the bottom edge. That was a low ebb in our CNC experience. - But as it turned out, new bearings cost $1,200, a motor shop balanced the armature, and a local machine shop was skilled to machine out the cup for the tools, and only one was too badly worn and needed to be discarded. These additional items cost me $500.00 so for $1700.00 above other expected costs we now believe we have the machine in fairly top notch shape. - We have been running the machine all the last two weeks, and it has been performing as is expected of a good machine. - So that is pretty much our story at this point. I don't feel the folks in Kansas really told us the whole story, but that is life. I personally would go used. Call the dealers listed in classifiedexchange.com You'll have to subscribe to get it. Also exfactory.com or woodquip.com and the yellow pages or do a google.com search. I can usually find basic used equipment locally through auctions or dealers for a decent price. My advantage is I learned how to rebuild equipment so I'm ready with resources on every possible contingency. For me used is the best bet but old iron isn't always the best either. New heads and technology are improving machines. I think Wilke/Bridgewood is a step better than Grizzly. Grizzly seems to be improving over time. Some pretty good prices in exfactory or try the classified on this site. The thing about exfactory is they are brokers who add their fee for listing machines. I've sold a few things through them with no problems. - Erich

It has been busy these past few days, and I have been very slow at replying to your last email - so let me update you as to where the whole mess sits. To begin with, last week I ordered the nameplate and other items (set of spacing collars, CCW spindle label, and a special bolt required to repair the hand brake). With elbow grease, the NORTHFIELD is looking respectable, a very nice machine. Looking forward to having it in operation soon. I appreciate what you and EX-FACTORY have done in this sale/purchase, and I am a bit chagrined because there are several other machines (contrary to wife Angela's wishes) in which I am interested. I hope that, even with the glitches, this sale has been a lucrative venture for you and that in the future you might bargain in my behalf in the purchase of other dreams. - Now the rest of the story - "the missing ring." Last Friday I had the necessary ring all packaged to send to Jeff at NORTHFIELD to have them make up the missing ring. I was visiting with my brother-in-law, telling him about the precision required to fit a new outer ring to the 2 inner rings. Well before I left his machine shop, he'd turned me a new outer ring. The steel he made it from is bright chrome, yet it fits wonderfully. So, I and the NORTHFIELD have a ring (not sure what Ned will charge us - the ring is now family and I'll let Angela twist a bill out of her brother) but we will take care of it. Thanks again - it has been grand experience. If I get a chance I'll send you a picture of the new ring. - Casey Fisher
